Traditional ethnobotany

Ongaonga, the giant nettle of New Zealand's forests, was feared and respected by the Maori long before the arrival of Europeans. Its powerful stinging hairs, capable of causing severe reactions in humans and animals alike, did not, however, prevent certain occasional and cautious uses in local tradition. It is ranked among the plants observed with great respect rather than handled lightly.
