Tradition
Traditional ethnobotany

A majestic tree of New Zealand's North Island coasts, the Pohutukawa is covered each austral December in crimson blossoms so brilliant that it earned the nickname "New Zealand's Christmas tree." The Māori gave it a special place, both in their stories and in their traditional plant pharmacopoeia.

Precautions

Before you use it

Traditional use is poorly documented scientifically outside the historical Māori context: caution is warranted. Avoid self-preparation for internal use without the advice of a healthcare professional or qualified herbalist. Do not use in pregnant or breastfeeding women, for lack of sufficient safety data. Reserved for occasional external use for untested preparations; consult a specialist for any internal use.
