Tradition
Traditional ethnobotany

The meadow grass par excellence, Timothy grass has long served farmers and herbalists as a benchmark for judging the quality of hay and pasture. A minor presence in our traditional European remedies, it belongs more to the world of fodder and beekeeping than to that of old remedies, although its pollen has drawn particular attention.

Precautions

Before you use it

Timothy grass pollen is one of the major causes of seasonal allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma in Europe: any deliberate exposure (desensitization) must be carried out exclusively under medical supervision. No documented, safe traditional internal use exists for this plant; it should not be consumed in homemade preparations for therapeutic purposes. People sensitive to grasses should avoid prolonged contact with the flowering plant, particularly during periods of heavy pollination. Do not confuse it with other grasses used differently; if in doubt botanically, consult an expert before any handling.
