Tradition
Traditional ethnobotany

Known in Japan as "senburi" — literally "a thousand boilings," so much does its bitterness withstand repeated infusions — Swertia japonica has for centuries held a prized place in Japanese folk pharmacopeia. Ancient herbalists recommended it as a bitter tonic, much like gentian in Europe, to support digestion after overly heavy meals.

Precautions

What to know before use

Avoid in cases of gastric ulcer or severe gastritis, as the bitterness may increase irritation. Not recommended without medical advice for pregnant or breastfeeding women, for lack of sufficient data. Do not exceed the traditional indicative doses, as overly concentrated bitterness may cause nausea. Seek the advice of a health professional if undergoing medication treatment, particularly digestive.
