Abuta rufescens
Abuta rufescens
Read before use: the information below describes traditional and informational uses — it does not replace the advice of a healthcare professional. In case of doubt, pregnancy, breastfeeding, ongoing treatment or use in children, seek advice before use.
Enhanced precautions for this plant: Traditional use poorly documented in Western scientific literature: caution is advised and consultation with a healthcare professional is recommended before any use. Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, due to its reported traditional use on the female cycle, which may suggest an uncharacterized hormonal action. Do not combine with other herbs or medications without professional advice, as interactions are not known with certainty. Do not use in children, due to insufficient data on tolerance and safety.
Decoction — Bark and root
Traditional bark decoction
In reported Amazonian uses, a piece of dried bark or root is boiled at length in water, then the preparation is filtered before consumption. This method, transmitted orally, does not benefit from a reliable standardized dosage and requires the advice of a qualified professional. Dosage to be validated with a healthcare professional or a recognized pharmacopoeia before use.
Where to find it
Sourcing the plant
This vine grows wild in the humid undergrowth of the Amazon rainforest, particularly in Peru, Colombia and Brazil. It is rarely found in Europe, except from a few herbalists specialized in Amazonian plants.
Harvest season
When to harvest it
The bark and root are traditionally harvested in the dry season, when the sap is considered more concentrated by local gatherers.
