Herbarium of the Ancients — Detailed Record

Acorus gramineus

Read before use: the information below describes traditional and informational uses — it does not replace the advice of a healthcare professional. If in doubt, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, while undergoing treatment, or for use with children, seek advice before use.

Enhanced precautions for this plant: Plant containing potent aromatic compounds (including asarone) whose safety for prolonged use is not clearly established; professional advice is essential before any use. Strictly avoid during pregnancy or breastfeeding, as well as in young children, due to lack of safety data. Do not combine with sedative treatments, anticoagulants, or other medications without medical advice, due to possible interactions. Do not confuse with Acorus calamus (Sweet Flag), whose toxicity and regulatory status differ; the two species should not be used interchangeably.

Decoction — Root (dried rhizome)

Traditional rhizome decoction

In Chinese pharmacopeia, the dried rhizome cut into slices was gently boiled with other plants according to complex formulas, never used alone without supervision. Preparation and dosage are exclusively the domain of a practitioner trained in traditional Asian pharmacopeias. Dosage must be validated with a healthcare professional or recognized pharmacopeia before use.

Powder — Dried root ground into powder

Rhizome powder

The dried rhizome was sometimes finely ground to be incorporated into complex traditional preparations, for digestive or cognitive purposes. This practice requires supervision by a professional familiar with appropriate dosages and combinations; no domestic use can be recommended here. Dosage must be validated with a healthcare professional or recognized pharmacopeia before use.
