Backhousia citriodora

Backhousia citriodora
Please read before use: the information below describes traditional and informational uses — it does not replace the advice of a healthcare professional. In case of doubt, pregnancy, breastfeeding, ongoing treatment, or use in children, seek advice before use.
Enhanced precautions for this plant: The essential oil of Backhousia citriodora is very rich in citral and may cause significant irritation to the skin and mucous membranes if not properly diluted: consultation with a qualified professional is recommended before any use. Use is not advised during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or in young children, without prior medical advice. Never ingest the pure essential oil; interactions with certain medications cannot be excluded. In cases of sensitive skin or allergic predisposition, a preliminary skin test is recommended before any application, even when diluted.
Infusion — Dried leaves

Dried leaf infusion

Pour simmering water over crushed dried leaves and let steep for about ten minutes, covered. Strain before drinking, optionally sweetened with a little honey. 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried leaves per cup, once or twice daily.

Infused oil — Fresh leaves

Leaf oil for external use

Fresh leaves were sometimes macerated in a neutral vegetable oil, away from light, for several weeks, to obtain a scented oil for very localized topical use. This preparation remains a poorly documented traditional use and requires consultation with a professional before use. Dosage must be validated with a healthcare professional or a recognized pharmacopoeia before use.

Inhalation — Fresh or dried leaves

Aromatic inhalation

A few crushed leaves are immersed in a bowl of hot simmering water; inhale the steam for a few minutes, eyes closed, to clear the respiratory passages. A healthcare professional should be consulted before prolonged use or in vulnerable individuals. Dosage must be validated with a healthcare professional or a recognized pharmacopoeia before use.
