Euphorbia candelabrum
Euphorbia candelabrum
Read before use: the information below describes traditional and informational uses — it does not replace the advice of a healthcare professional. If in doubt, pregnant, breastfeeding, undergoing treatment, or using with children, seek advice before use.
Enhanced precautions for this plant: The white latex is highly irritant and caustic: it can cause severe skin burns and serious eye lesions, including possible temporary or permanent vision loss if it comes into contact with the eyes. Ingestion, even in small amounts, is potentially toxic and can cause severe digestive disturbances; it is strongly discouraged without supervision by a qualified professional. Absolutely contraindicated in pregnant or breastfeeding women, in children, and if there is any doubt about handling the plant. Cutting, pruning, or any manipulation of the plant must be done with gloves, safety goggles, and by strictly avoiding any contact with the face.
Highly diluted topical application — Latex
Traditional external use on warts
Traditionally, a tiny drop of fresh latex was applied only to the lesion to be treated, carefully avoiding the surrounding healthy skin. This practice requires extreme caution and should only be considered after consulting a healthcare professional. Dosage must be validated with a healthcare professional or recognized pharmacopoeia before use.
Diluted decoction for external use — Bark and stem
Traditional external preparation
The bark or small stem fragments were sometimes reduced to a highly diluted decoction, used externally only, never internally, in certain local traditions. Handling the latex that flows from it remains risky and requires strict precautions. Dosage must be validated with a healthcare professional or recognized pharmacopoeia before use.
Where to find it
Obtaining the plant
This arborescent euphorbia grows wild in arid savannas and rocky areas of eastern and southern Africa; it is not commercially available in Western herbalism due to its toxicity and is only present in certain botanical gardens or specialized succulent plant collections.
Harvest season
When to harvest it
In regions of origin, the latex was traditionally collected during the dry season, when the plant is considered most concentrated in sap, always with dedicated tools and appropriate protective equipment.
