Timothy Grass
Phleum pratense
Please read before use: the information below describes traditional and informational uses — it does not replace the advice of a healthcare professional. In case of doubt, pregnancy, breastfeeding, ongoing treatment, or use in children, seek advice before use.
Enhanced precautions for this plant: Timothy grass pollen is one of the major causes of seasonal allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma in Europe: any voluntary exposure (desensitization) must be performed exclusively under medical supervision. No documented and safe traditional internal use exists for this plant; it should not be consumed in homemade preparations for therapeutic purposes. Individuals sensitive to grasses should avoid prolonged contact with the flowering plant, especially during periods of heavy pollination. Do not confuse with other grasses having different uses; in case of botanical doubt, consult an expert before any handling.
Where to Find It
Obtaining the Plant
Timothy grass is found in meadows, roadsides, and pastures throughout Europe; it is also cultivated as forage. Its standardized pollen for desensitization is only available in pharmacies by prescription.
Harvest Season
When to Harvest
Flowering, and thus the emission of the most allergenic pollen, occurs between May and July depending on the region; hay is traditionally harvested before complete spike emergence.
