Hyoscyamus niger

Hyoscyamus niger
Read before use: the information below describes traditional and informational uses — it does not replace the advice of a healthcare professional. In case of doubt, pregnancy, breastfeeding, ongoing treatment, or use in children, seek advice before use.
Enhanced precautions for this plant: Highly toxic plant containing tropane alkaloids (hyoscyamine, scopolamine); never consume without supervision by a qualified professional. Strictly contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well as in children. Risk of serious interactions with numerous medications, particularly those for cardiac, psychiatric, or anticholinergic purposes. Regulated use: black henbane is classified among poisonous plants and its sale is regulated in France.
Tincture — Leaves and flowers

Traditional tincture (historical use only)

Historically prepared by macerating dried leaves and flowers in alcohol, this tincture was dosed with extreme caution by apothecaries. Its preparation and use should under no circumstances be replicated without supervision by a healthcare professional trained in this plant. Dosage must be validated with a healthcare professional or recognized pharmacopoeia before use.

Poultice — Leaves

Ancient external use poultice

Fresh or dried leaves were sometimes crushed and applied as a poultice to painful areas. This practice, documented in old herbals, nevertheless exposed users to a risk of cutaneous absorption of alkaloids and today requires professional advice before any use. Dosage must be validated with a healthcare professional or recognized pharmacopoeia before use.

Where to find it

Obtaining the plant

Black henbane grows spontaneously in wastelands, rubble, and roadsides throughout Europe, but its toxicity makes it a plant that should never be harvested or used by oneself; it is not found in ordinary herbalist shops and remains reserved for regulated pharmaceutical use.
