Cultivated flax has accompanied humanity for thousands of years, both for its woven fibers and for its golden or brown seeds, prized in traditional herbal medicine. Native to Asia, it was cultivated very early on the banks of Mesopotamia before spreading to every garden in Europe, where a reserve of seeds was always kept at the back of the remedy cupboard.
Always take flaxseed with a sufficient amount of water, due to its strong swelling power, to avoid any digestive discomfort. Not recommended in cases of known bowel obstruction or intestinal narrowing; seek the advice of a health professional if in doubt. Flaxseed has a mild estrogen-like activity: its regular use should be discussed with a professional in cases of pregnancy, breastfeeding, or hormonal treatment. Unground seeds that are not well moistened can pass through the digestive system without releasing their benefits; freshly ground seeds are preferable.
