Fennel
Foeniculum vulgare
Before use: the information below describes traditional and informational uses — it does not replace the advice of a healthcare professional. In case of doubt, pregnancy, breastfeeding, ongoing treatment, or use in children, seek advice before use.
Fennel seeds contain anethole; prolonged or high-dose use should be moderate, particularly in pregnant or breastfeeding women, for whom advice from a healthcare professional is recommended. Avoid in individuals with a history of hormone-dependent conditions, due to traditionally reported estrogen-like properties. In case of ongoing medication (particularly anticoagulants), consult a pharmacist or physician before any regular course. In infants, prepare the infusion only at low concentration and after advice from a healthcare professional.
Infusion — Seeds (fruits)
Digestive infusion of fennel seeds
Lightly crush one teaspoon of seeds to release the essential oils, pour simmering water over them, and let steep covered for about ten minutes before straining. Traditionally drunk after meals, warm. 1 to 2 teaspoons of seeds per cup, 1 to 3 cups per day for adults.
Decoction — Seeds
Concentrated decoction for mouthwash or compresses
Gently boil one tablespoon of seeds in 250 ml of water for about five minutes, then let cool before external use. This more concentrated preparation was traditionally reserved for topical use, not intended for regular consumption without professional advice. Dosage should be validated with a healthcare professional or recognized pharmacopoeia before use.
Where to find it
Sourcing the plant
Wild fennel is found in wastelands and sunny roadsides of the Mediterranean basin, while its dried seeds are commonly sold in herbalist shops and specialty food stores. It is also easily cultivated in the garden, in light and well-drained soil.
Harvest season
When to harvest it
Seeds are traditionally harvested at the end of summer, when the umbels brown and dry in the sun.
